I just started looking at Alpha 5 and reading the messages and have a couple of questions:
1) What ActiveX controls work and don't work in Alpha5? Is there some list of works vs. don't work, and why explanation of why some don't work with Alpha 5? 2) How would you create a trial version of an Alpha 5 application? If Alpha 5 created a compiled .exe of your application - as does VB, Clarion, Windev, Delphi, Visual FoxPro, etc - a program like Armadillo could be used to copy protect the .exe file. I noted in one message that someone suggested that since Alpha 5 can use ActiveX controls they could be used to create trial versions, but that goes back to question 1. Anyone know of ActiveX controls for copy protection that would work with Alpha 5? So far, I see a lot of positives on behalf of Alpha 5 and it looks like it is a great product, but seems to have some issues, I guess, when compared to other application development tools. One more question, how big is the runtime for an Alpha 5 application? 15 megs? more? less? Thanks for any information to the above. Dennis |

Hello Dennis,
Right now A5v5 does not have great support for ActiveX objects, however v6 will have much improved support, and I'm expecting few issues with 3rd party ActiveX objects. The good news is that I'm betting we will not have long to wait.......... I hope :-) I just checked my a5 runtime directory, not counting subdirectories, it is 38 megs. >>2) How would you create a trial version of an Alpha 5 application? |

To add to Jims info, A5 does not create a compiled exe. Most developers prefer this since changes are much easier. As for security, there has been a good discussion recently in the Announcments forum of all places. The first or second topic was about a security addon which lead to a discussion of security issues and creating demos and registration schemes. Jerry |

Just to echo Jim's comments re Active x support in version 6.
Significant effort has been expended in this area and version 6 will have excellent Active x support! thanks richard rabins |

I always have felt that a version number change should have at least one significant change. That would count. I also beleave that V6 gives full SQL support.

While your A5V5 runtime directory may be 38MB, the runtime installation is only 12MB. This is the size of the file that you would be distributing to your users.
