Data edits prevented by Validation Field Rule

I have a situation where a field rule is preventing me from editing a table. It appears that Alpha Five V1 permitted the editing, while V11 wants no part of it. Please let me explain.

I have a Customer table with a unique customer number. The Validation field rule specifically says:
A5Validation_1.jpg
and
A5Validation_2.jpg

Version 1 enforced this rule on creating a new customer record, but NOT on editing the record.

Version 11 is throwing the error when any field in the record is edited, as well.

Can anyone explain whether this is normal behavior for current versions of A5 and if so, how do I code the Validation to ensure uniqueness of the key but still permit the record to be edited.

If you can help get this problem behind me, I'll have completed the first leg of a painful migration from A1 to A11.

Tom, Thank You!!!

Your screencast was the best video I've enjoyed this year. You solved my problem, as you knew you did. Out of desperation to get the freaking form working I was going to remove my validation test but I wasn't sure that specifying "unique key" was good enough. I needed an Alphaholic to tell me not to worry!

I guess it's safe to say that A1 and A11 are different in how they treat a validation test for uniqueness of key. It would have been nice if the field rule could have distinguished between being in Enter mode versus Change mode.

Well, thanks to you I'm now going to finish up a bunch of forms and then I have quite a bit of XBASIC conversion to look forward to (which I'm not).

You'll hear from me again no doubt as I continue my journey.
