Default Run Alpha5v9 on Windows 7 - Virtual PC - Windows XP mode

    Hi there,

My App has not been converted to Alpha5v11 as yet. Trying to run Alpha5v9 on Windows 7 in Virtual PC Windows XP mode. Not much luck.
Microsoft assisted in loading XP mode, so I assume that should be ok. Anyone out there had any success in achieving this.

    Looking forward

Your mileage may vary, but I run vers 9 desktop apps on my Win 7 box without using virtual XP mode.

    Me too Dave.
The key - well, this works for me - is to load Alpha V9 R/time or Dev outside of the Prog (x86) folder.
Load the apps elsewhere as well.
On first run, go for Run as Administrator
You might want to run the Compatability check as well.

    I have V9 and 10.5 running fine.
(too poor to buy V11 but I'm hopeful that Richard or Selwyn will send me a copy for Christmas)

    Hi Tom, Ted,

I remember that you guys seem to be ok with Version 9 under Windows 7.

Back then, I eventually reloaded Windows 7 and I have had no problems since. However, if you refer to my most recent entry on this message board, I am having problems Printing a Pdf file. How did you get around this one ?

    Looking forward

    Dave,

much has been written about this. Search for threads discussing "save as "PDF" issues.

Here are a couple of things to try immediately.

    1) log on to Windows 7 as an Administrator
    2) uninstall A5v9
    3) edit registry entries to delete all references to A5v9
    4) shut down the machine
    5) start Win 7 as Administrator
    6) install A5v9 to a folder outside of "Program Files" and outside of "Program Files (x86).
    7) test your app
    8) if still having trouble close A5v9, and run "InstallAmyuniPrinters.exe" as Adminstrator. You'll find it in the A5v9 program files folder

Some recommend doing all this after first disabling UAC restrictions. I always do this, too. (this specific change may require a reboot).

    Hi Tom,

Thanks for your pointers. Ted suggested much the same way back. I had already reloaded Windows 7 and things seems ok, so I left well alone.

Will step through your suggestions and see if I can get it right.

    Hi Tom,

I did as you suggested - seems much the same at the end.

Ran "InstallAmyuniPrinters.exe" as administrator and got a few error messages which I am attaching - not sure if they are significant ?

How do i disable UAC restrictions. ? maybe I am getting the same results because I did not do this ?

Dave, yes, that's likely. Check the help system in Windows 7. The UAC system is part of system security.

    Hello

The A5v9 runs without WindowsXp mode at my new windows 7 OS as per Tom's direction but
I have the problem to run the "RunTime" on the other computers which has the Windows xp os.
I created the shadow files and runs ok but after shutdown the computer and restart, the A5v9 runtime programs does not able to open the shadow files and shows the error

The error is indicated as "Could not open or create the multi-user ..."

I think that some of a5 programs are missing on windows folder directory.
    or
Am I using wrong file folder directory at my main computer which has the Windows 7 OS?

I tried on the " ...\user\my document " and "..\user\public " window directory but neither one does same result.

Does any one know how to fix it?

"Could not open or create the multi-user ..."
This error has to do with Windows access priviledges, not Alpha. The users must have write priviledges in Windows security for the directory where the database resides.

    Thank you, Stan.

After I added a new Windows UAC user as standard user and moved the "File Folder" up and down, The RunTime works now.
I am not still 100% sure that the "Libraries" folder structure on Windows 7 OS.

    To Dave,
I am having problems Printing a Pdf file. How did you get around this one ?
Yes, I had same problem with the Anyuni printer setting but I solved this problem now.
    (1) I cpoied the "Install Anyuni Printer" from A5v9 directory.
    (2) Pasted at Users\<Name, Administrator Level>\AppData\Roaming\Alpha5\a5v9 directory.
** I am not sure I can do this, step 2 or not and any risk but I did

    (3) Selected the "Install Anyuni Printer" from A5v9 directory again and runs to install
    (4) after completed the installation
    (5) Restart Windows and tested.

    Good luck

    Hi Tom, Johnkoh,

    Thanks for the help.

Did as you suggested. When I ran "Install Anyuni Printer" it gave me the same error mess as before. But then it gave me an option .. recommended.. I selected this and it did the trick responding with a few "successful install" in place of the errors as before. I rebooted and it created the Pdf file and printed.

    Have a good new year.
